Dead man parking on Chicago streets

The city of Chicago set aside special handicapped street parking for at least 260 dead people in 2006, according to a story in today’s Chicago Sun-Times. That’s not the only problem with the system. Almost 10 percent of the roughly 11,500 disabled spots weren’t anywhere near the residence of a disabled person, the Sun-Times found.

The story pins the blame on Chicago’s creaky bureaucracy and scheming relatives of the departed. The city’s Department of Revenue holds out hope that a “computer upgrade” will cut down on errors in 2007. Given the Kafka-esque dysfunction of most city offices when it comes to parking, we aren’t holding our breath.
