Battle for skyline supremacy rages on

400 N Lake Shore Drive

The last time we pitted the city’s planned high-rises against each other to duke it out for skyline supremacy, the erstwhile Fordham Spire emerged, unsurprisingly, as the most obvious contender for icon status. Since Shelbourne Development, which acquired the site of the Spire from The Fordham Company and tentatively renamed it 400 North Lake Shore Drive, hasn’t finalized details or begun sales on the project, we’re taking Santiago Calatrava‘s 126-story powerhouse out of the ring. Check out our earlier picks and our latest ones (inside) and decide for yourself which building will reign supreme on the Chicago skyline.

Mandarin Oriental Canyon Ranch Living

Mandarin Oriental Tower (left), standing 74 stories, is located at 230 N Stetson Ave on the New East Side, and the 67-story Canyon Ranch Living tower is planned for 680 N Rush St (although sales haven’t started yet, we had to sneak this elliptical stunner into the competition).

Park 1000 X/O

At 40 stories, Park 1000 may be the runt of the pack, but its location at 1000 S Michigan Ave ensures it could pack a wallop on the ol’ skyline. Likewise, the towers of X/O Condominiums may reach to only 44 and 34 stories, but their location and cutting-edge architecture ensures these two will turn a lot of heads.

One Museum Park One Museum Park (west tower)

One Museum Park and One Museum Park (west tower) will go hand-to-hand in a prime location on Prairie Avenue just south of Roosevelt. The east tower stands at 65 stories, and the west tops out at 53, but could David beat Goliath again?
