Many of Chicago's new construction single-family homes are found in neighborhoods on the South Side.
Fifteen single-families are available in Englewood at the Englewood Crossing development, part of the New Homes for Chicago program. A couple years back, the managing broker of AMS Realty, which is marketing the project, said the single-family homes would be listed for under $200,000. This affordability is technically a requirement of the New Homes program, yet each home is listed in the $210s without any price reductions over almost two years.
South Side neighborhood Washington Heights has six listings from the $190s to the $360s with up to 2,400 square feet, five of which include two-car garages. Just last night, Chicago Heights Alderman Howard B. Brookins Jr. approved a $500,000 program to assist home buyers with down payments. It is designed to lure new homeowners into the city. Applicants will be required to stay in Washington Heights for five years or repay the granted money. The starting date will be announced within the next few weeks.
